Nets Acquire Allen Crabbe

The Brooklyn Nets continue an event-filled offseason with another trade. The Nets have moved PF Andrew Nicholson to the Portland Trail Blazers for SG Allen Crabbe. This trade comes one year after the Nets signed Crabbe to a $74 million offer sheet which Portland ultimately matched. Under league rules, the Trail Blazers had to wait one year until they could include him in a trade to the Nets.

Crabbe, who chose to waive his 15% trade kicker, averaged 10.7 points, 1.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds and shot 44% from beyond the arc over 79 games played while averaging 28.5 minutes per game last season. The Nets will likely start Crabbe alongside D’Angelo Russell in the backcourt and play a key role in creating space for DeMarre Carroll and Timofey Mozgov down low. However, he is due $19.3 million this year and $18.5 million the following year with a player option in the third, which could be viewed as overpaid should Crabbe not produce at a high level.

Andrew Nicholson will be subsequently waived by Portland and have his four-year, $26 million dollar contract stretched to be paid over time. With the Nets, Nicholson averaged 2.6 points and 1.6 rebounds over nine minutes of garbage time per game last season.
