Bucks Lead

First Takes On DJ Wilson’s Summer League Action

After three summer league games in the books, let’s take a look at how the Bucks’ first round draft pick, DJ Wilson, has fared.

Game 1: 11 points (31% FG, 0/2 3Pt), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 blocks

               Game 2: 16 points (46% FG, 40% 3Pt), 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 blocks

           Game 3: 17 points (53% FG, 50% 3Pt), 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks

Without watching a minute of basketball and only analyzing the three stat lines shown above, they show a kid becoming more comfortable playing with his teammates and trusting his shot. However, it should be noted that game one was a 30 point loss and the only person with more points was Rashad Vaughn, with 12. But let’s talk in more detail than just a quick overview of the stats.

Watching the last two games showed the versatility of DJ. While his stats are very similar, game two showcased DJ as a role player with Thon Maker and Rashad Vaughn stepping up and leading the team to a victory. Wilson knew that the two sophomore’s on their team would be stepping up this summer league and looked to help in any way he could. Game three on the other hand, was DJ’s time to step up and lead the team, which he did. DJ created his own shots and helped open the floor for others with 4 assists.

I believe that Wilson really showed how versatile he can be in only three games. He showed an ability to step aside and impact the game without the ball constantly in his hands and the very next game, step up and help lead a team when needed shows a maturity that many young players don’t have. Only time will tell if Wilson will work on the young Milwaukee Bucks but at first glance, his length, ability to create his own shot and defend will give the team a solid role player and possible future starter.

It should be noted that Rashad Vaughn was the true leader of the team in games 2 and 3 as he lead the team in points in both games. However, Wilson was able to step up on his own while helping Vaughn shoulder some the leadership responsibilities of a young summer league squad in game three.
